The Red Trickle

My capstone is an exhibition that discusses the issues of online harassment, most prominently perpetrated by alt-right communities towards LGBTQIA+ people. The exhibition showcases content from individuals who are willing to share their first-hand experiences; discusses ways of recognizing signs of harassment and how to handle these situations; and shares relevant reports of similar topics.

“The Red Trickle” is my Capstone 395 project for DePaul University. It is an exhibition stand that displays the issues of online harassment, most prominently alt-right communities and their attacks towards LGBTQIA+ people. The usage of the Internet’s anonymity, alongside the utilization of platforms like 4chan, 8kun, Parler, Gab, and having their digital and physical actions hurting innocent folk was the tipping point for this project.

Blake James Becker
My name is Blake Becker. I’m a 23 year old gay man whose witnessed and endured prejudice, solely based off sexuality. To see this kind of behavior protected and fostered in plain sight online, and seeing it overlap into other marginalized communities... This was the catalyst for working on my capstone. I wanted to create a large project to show that myself and many others are not alone with these issues, regardless if they're exclusively about sexuality. I wanted to create easy-to-access content to educate others on warning signs and how to combat it. No one should ever be harmed, in any way, because of who they love or who they are. I want to spread positivity and help, but tackling the issues head-on are needed for progress.
