Designing Props for Sci-Fi Films
︎︎︎ Project Website

I have designed eight props for eight different science fiction films. Each prop is redesigned to fit within the universe and aesthetics of the film. The reasoning for the choice of films is that they are some of my favorites of the genre and of all time. I wanted to create this as my capstone because I am very passionate about film and incorporating that into my designs. After learning about Annie Atkins, a graphic designer for film, I discovered designing props would be a perfect intersection of my interests.

When designing the props, I wanted to stay true to the universe of the film but imagine how it could have been done better. I also aimed to select props that were iconic and recognizable even if I changed the graphics. Some props were a blank canvas to work with like the Cantina Cups or Marty’s Guitar. Others were a more complex redesign with the Multipass or cassette tape.

All the graphics for the props were designed in Illustrator and then placed into mockups in Photoshop. The props are presented in a fake auction site. I designed it in Figma to be interactive. On the shopping page, you can click each prop to open an overlay and see more details and images. I also designed a simple logo for this fictional “Prop World” site. In the about page, I explain the concept of the project, my design decisions for each prop, and before and after images.

Ryley Lenstrom
My name is Ryley Lenstrom and I am just graduating from DePaul University with a BFA in Graphic Design. I’ve been doing graphic design for almost 10 years, with my first experience being a graphic design class in freshman year of high school. I fell in love with designing graphics instantly and continued to take classes each year of high school. In college, I improved my skills greatly and learned of all the different paths graphic design can take you. I worked on publication design, advertising design, poster design, wayfinding, motion graphics, and more. I’d describe my design style as bold but simple. I like to use a lot of color, geometric shapes, sans-serif type, and grid layouts. My other biggest passion is film and I nearly minored in it. I like to incorporate that whenever I can, and I was able to for my capstone.
