Marijuana’s Influence on Music

Marijuana has played a significant role on music through the creative process of songwriting, the way we interpret it and listen, and how it is perceived by other generations in both negative and positive light. While scientific research investigating this topic is rare, there are several hypotheses that attempt to explain the pleasurable and consequential duet that is cannabis and music which is exactly what this project tackles.

Marijuana has played a significant role on music through the creative process of songwriting, the way we interpret it and listen, and how it is perceived by other generations in both a negative and positive light. While scientific research investigating this topic is rare, there are several hypotheses that attempt to explain the pleasurable and consequential duet that is cannabis and music. Through experimentation and firsthand accounts, this project tackles the social, economic, medicinal, and personal experiences from common people and the most famous musicians on the planet. Artists like the Beatles, Bob Marley, Louis Armstrong, and etc., discuss the impact that marijuana has played on their lives as well as their musical careers and how this relationship has either changed or stayed the same since their early years of using. Marijuana has also played a significant role in the physical visuals of music as it has led to the development of some of the most famous album cover art of our time. There is no clear answer on whether marijuana makes music better, but what we do know is that this plant has influenced music in some of the most powerful ways and continues to play a pivotal role in the industry.

I’m an Oklahoma native now attending DePaul University in Chicago to pursue a degree in graphic design. I have always had a variety of deep interests, the main two being art and sports. For as long as I can remember, art has been a therapeutic pastime throughout my life, while sports have provided me with an inspiring and encouraging community along with role models. The passion I have for these areas is the reason I was initially pulled toward graphic design – it allows me to portray my admiration for sports and athletes through artistic expression. However, my skills and interests are not limited to sports design. Graphic design is a diverse platform that allows me to incorporate a range of my interests into my artistic expression and expand my talent.
